portrait assignment pt.2

avedon's style is renown. The simple lighting, the simple backgrounds and the simple composition are all factors in avedon's portraiture; However his succes in portraiture was not only about the technical aspect of his work. i was more drawn to his celebrity portraits because i could better understand his intention if i knew who this person was. avedon portrayed these celebrities in a way we never see them, in the rawest form. He took control of the sitter, often tricking them but ''not for the sake of tricking them, only for the sake of the image''.

After watching a 9 part series on avedon's work ( avedon: darkness and light) my understanding of his work has changed completely. i think that trying to recreating his work will now be more difficult, realizing how much thought and effort he put into his work to get that expression that says so much.
